The Purple-leaf Cherry Plum is located in the new parking lot of Davis Senior High School. This dicot tree grows between 20-40 feet tall. It is highly recognizable with its bright purple leaves and vibrant pink or purple flowers during spring. The purple-leaf plum produces red drupe fruit which are used for jam and wine-making. Although the tree is native to Asia, it is common throughout N. America and Europe. Premium conditions are acidic soil and full sun; however, it can tolerate heat and drought. This color tree grows rapidly and has a short life span. In its short life span it plays an important role of providing food and shelter for birds and small mammals.
